Automata is a puzzle game that combines the gameplay of The Witness with an arresting, dystopian world. It’s also the latest instalment in Square Enix’s long-running NieR franchise which has been criticized for leaning too heavily on eastern culture and spirituality. No matter what you think about Automata itself, it does offer up some interesting food for thought when considering recent discussions surrounding games rooted in Eastern cultures vs those created by western developers without any specific cultural ties beyond their own country
Automata is a machine that can generate lifeforms, and the NieR franchise is a series of video games. The word “automata” comes from the Ancient Greek word “autós”, meaning “self-moving”.
It’s difficult to discuss NieR without going on a two-hour tirade that accomplishes nothing.
Any effort to sum up NieR in a few succinct lines would be pointless given the intriguing backstory and director Yoko Taro’s avant-garde aesthetic vision.
However, one aspect of NieR stands out on its own: waifus.
NieR is filled with attractive anime females because Yoko Taro enjoys them more than complicated plots that explore the nature of consciousness.
As I try to rate these strange beauties, be ready for intense competition.
5. Popola & Devola
It may be unjust to include two waifus in instead of one for all one-woman acts, but Popola and Devola wouldn’t be the same without the other.
In NieR, these two stunning women with pink hair were introduced as the village chiefs.
They are only revealed to be androids working for Project Gestalt halfway through the game.
They are thus technically artificial bodies without a soul, yet you’ll soon see that they have a lot of spirit for hollow vessels.
Popola and Devola both make a comeback in NieR: Automata.
They are technically not the two from the original game, but rather later-produced replicas, and may be discovered at the Resistance Camp.
4. A2 (YoRHa Type A No.2)
Beautiful battle android prototype A2 served as the basis for the development of subsequent, more advanced androids like 2B and 9S.
She serves as the primary protagonist in NieR: Automata’s several timeframes for Branch C.
She initially presents as timid and quiet, but it soon becomes clear that she is fiery and rash. She is the last to lay her weapon down after entering a dangerous situation.
Once you come to know A2, it’s difficult not to adore her.
After losing her friends, she seems a little mad at first, but in reality, she is simply really lonely. To deal with her loneliness, she turns to violence and wages an eternal war of retaliation against the robots.
Operator 6O 3.
Even though she can’t be controlled, 2B’s Operator in NieR: Automata is one of the Bunker’s few really pleasant characters.
The first NPC we speak to in the game and one of the most noticeable overall is 6O.
She offers you mission information and instructions while also demonstrating a sincere concern for your welfare.
Although she is 2B’s assistance, she is really rather unique from other operators, contrary to what you may expect. It seems genuine, and if you’re finding it difficult to function on Hard or Very Hard, it’s an incredible source of emotional support.
You should fetch the flower for this pious android if she ever requests one! She is deserving of everything.
2. Kaine
Like A2, Kaine is a shockingly vicious woman who would rather use her horrifying twin sword saws than attempt to negotiate a solution.
This Replicant is one of the most alluring ladies in video games, and she is just as lethal as she is attractive. Her angelic appearance of silky smooth skin, delicate features, and silvery white hair stands in sharp contrast to the rage and evil in her gaze.
You may argue that Kaine has a dual personality.
Kaine is intersex, despite the fact that she constantly uses the pronoun “she” and dresses femininely.
She is, nevertheless, half-human and half-Shade since a Shade is possessed of half of her body.
She had the courage and talent to succeed despite being plagued with being an outsider.
1. 2B (YoRHa No.2 Type B)
If you’ve been anyplace where games are discussed over the last couple of years, seeing 2B at the top of the rating shouldn’t be a surprise.
As of this writing, 2B is undisputedly the greatest waifu ever—not just in the NieR series, but in all of gaming.
For years, this eyepatch-wearing beauty has won popularity surveys and cosplay competitions, and she often appears in other video games. If you include modifications, 2B can be found in almost any game that calls for an adorable waifu.
I’ve never seen someone wear thigh-high boots quite so beautifully. She’s a lethal combat robot with a propensity for insightful philosophical one-liners.
2B will be remembered as one of the greatest waifus of all time.
