NVIDIA has released their demo for how DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) is superior to the current methods of upscaling, like AMD FidelityFX or MSAA. NVIDIA argues that it’s not just about the quality of image which they believe is better than these other methods, but also about performance efficiency and power consumption.

NVIDIA has released a video demonstrating all of the new features in DLSS 2.3, the newest version of their deep learning super sampling technology. NVIDIA’s Bryan Catanzaro (Vice President, Applied Deep Learning Research) points out that spatial upscalers have been available for a long time and explains why they cannot compete in terms of picture quality. On its official website, AMD describes its FidelityFX Super Resolution technology as “a state-of-the-art spatial upscaling technique.”

DLSS is a temporal approach that improves detail while reducing flickering. It’s simple to utilize information from numerous frames if nothing is moving since you can just stack the frames together to gain additional data. However, while you’re playing a game, everything move around and the aesthetic changes, including lighting and shadows, so it’s not as simple. DLSS mixes artificial intelligence with geometric motion vectors to make better judgements about whether information from previous frames may be reused.
