PLZ-83 is a Chinese premium tier II ground force tank introduced in the Supertest update for War Thunder. It’s one of the most powerful tanks available in game and has it’s own unique playstyle that may not be immediately apparent to those familiar with other vehicles like the Soviet T-34, U.S M4 Sherman or German Tiger I.

PLZ83
The Type 83 is a Chinese self-propelled howitzer, also known as the PLZ83. It looks a lot like the Soviet 2S3 Akatsiya in the game, but it has a different chassis and a modified D-20 known as the Type 66, or PL-66. It uses the same ammo and includes a 12.7 mm machine gun on top of the turret. After many years of failed ideas, it was China’s first modern self-propelled howitzer. I believe this vehicle will have the same combat rating as the 2S3, 6.3, and will provide China with a big caliber cannon.
History
During the 1970s, the People’s Liberation Army’s sole self-propelled howitzer was the Type 70-I, which had its share of problems. The crew was exposed to enemy fire and shell fragments, the chassis was underpowered, and there were a number of other concerns.
The Type 70-I is a 122 mm gun-wielding APC built on a longer Type 63 chassis.
In the late 1970s, 674 Factory, now known as Harbin First Machinery Building Group Ltd, started developing a new design. In February of 1980, a prototype was constructed, and it was enhanced after testing. In 1981, the revised prototype was completed, and testing continued until the end of 1982. The vehicle entered service as the PLZ83 in 1983, with PLZ standing for Pàobng Lidànpào Zxng, which translates to Artillery Howitzer Self-Propelled, and 19(83) being the year it entered service.

When mass manufacturing of the PLZ83 commenced in May of 1983, a variety of firms were engaged. Factory 5318 (howitzer), Factory 127 (semi-automatic loader), Factory 298 (targeting devices), Factory 754 and Factory 843 are among the factories participating in the production. Only 78 were manufactured when manufacturing terminated in 1990. The PLZ83 was eventually phased out in favor of more modern systems like the PLZ-05.

Design
The PLZ83’s primary armament is a 152 mm howitzer that can fire standard artillery rounds such high explosive, smoke, and illumination, as well as contemporary Norinco munitions like laser-guided projectiles. A semi-automatic loader aids loading, firing at a rate of around 5 rounds per minute. The turret is equipped with 30 rounds of ammo.
The vehicle’s chassis is the Type 321 Medium Tracked Chassis, which has been seen on a number of different vehicles, including the PTZ89. The vehicle is powered by a 520 horsepower WR4B-12V150LB four-stroke, water-cooled diesel engine that can travel at 55 km/h for up to 450 kilometers.
