It’s been a while since Epic Games released the second version of Unreal, but now they’ve announced plans to release a remastered edition. That begs the question; when is this game going to be available?

Unreal, a historic first-person shooter developed in 1998 by Epic MegaGames and Digital Extremes, was the first to use Epic’s pioneering Unreal Engine, which has since gone through five major revisions to power many of today’s largest games. A recent exchange between original designer Cliff Bleszinski and Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney highlighted by Nightdive Studios co-founder Stephen Kick has now provided indication that Unreal could be getting a modern remaster, one that will introduce the classic to a new generation of gamers akin to recent re-releases that include System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition and Quake. Bleszinski, who is also renowned for creating the Gears of War series, has recognized the tweet but said that he is unable to comment at this time owing to legal issues. The original version of Unreal is presently available on Steam and GOG as part of the Gold release, which includes the now-defunct Legend Entertainment’s Return to Na Pali expansion. Due to Epic’s stronger attention in Fortnite, Unreal Tournament 2014 is still in beta.
For legal reasons, I’m not saying anything.

Cliff Bleszinski contacted Epic CEO Tim Sweeney on Nightdive’s behalf after the Quake remake, according to a tweet by Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick. Unreal, which came out in 1998, deserves a comparable restoration, according to its co-designer. “I think if you want that, you’ll have to leave a message for Tim to know,” Kick said.
While the Unreal series is most known for its multiplayer, the first game included a strong singleplayer option that began with a thrilling prison-ship escape storyline. After then, it opened out into massive alien expanses that showcased the then-new Unreal Engine’s graphical capabilities, albeit it was also notable for ambient sound design, alt-firing weapon variation, and the tough AI behind the skaarj, the alien adversaries.
