MOVIE REVIEW – In Uncharted, Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg play Nathan Drake and Victor Sullivan (Sully), a film that has been in the works since 2008 (!) and is now in theaters. The filmmakers didn’t even try to follow the games one-to-one, as seen by the teasers, but the issue remains: was the adaptation enjoyable enough, and did it match the standards anticipated of an Uncharted film adaptation? Last but not least, will it be able to overcome the curse of video game adaptations?
Few genres are plagued as much as video game adaptations. Hollywood blockbusters have been attempting to bring the exploits of pixel heroes to the big screen since the disastrously terrible Super Mario in 1993. Nonetheless, the majority of these films have been at best subpar.
Analyzing the causes of this all-too-common failure would take much too long. It isn’t the point of this post, so let’s see whether the video game adaptation that has been running since 2007 finally strikes the target, or if it is a fairly accurate adaptation or simply another in a long line of unsuccessful video game movies.
The rough man and the well-adjusted boomer
Again, one might argue for pages about whether Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg were the best performers for Nate and Sully, or other actors would have been better. Every time we see Holland, we think of Spider-Man, and it’s difficult to forget that Wahlberg was originally supposed to be Nathan Drake, but he was also Max Payne in the badly bungled video game adaptation. Well, this is Uncharted, and the issue for fans and non-fans is whether the two actors do a good job bringing the everlasting heroes of the Uncharted games to life, or should we avoid going to the movies because we’d be fleeing out with our eyes up to the sky?
Well, the fact is that getting acclimated to Holland and Wahlberg in familiar characters takes a lot of goodwill and at least half an hour and a quarter of an hour of screen time. Tom Holland is a brilliant actor who has perfected his craft for the character, but no matter how hard he tries, he still reminds us more of Peter Parker than of Naughty Dog’s often cynical, sometimes suave and tough-guy gem. The reality is that Nathan Drake’s karate and adventures are inspired by films like Michael Douglas’ The Emerald Romance and Harrison Ford’s The Indiana Jones Series, and we might envision these two performers as a thousand times better than Tom Holland’s somewhat too ‘nice guy’ and ‘neighbourhood bully’. The biggest issue is that Holland’s acting repertoire lacks the big-talking ease and sense of wickedness that makes Drake, among others, so much fun and vital for the character. However, although Holland is a brilliant actor (he’s proved himself in a number of films other than Spider-Man), and his Nathan Drake is pleasant and sympathetic, you must understand that he isn’t the Nate from the game.
buddy film
Similarly, Mark Wahlberg’s Victor Sullivan isn’t the Victor Sullivan we’re used to seeing in the game. Sully is a loud-talking, older bully who was just as big an ace as Nate when he was younger (a side of him we see more of in Uncharted 3, when he meets the adolescent Nate), but he rapidly becomes a cheerful father figure to Nate, who is also his adventure buddy. The former ace of aces in his fifties, portrayed by Wahlberg, is a full-fledged action hero and adventurer in this one, not just Nate’s sidekick in the games, and is a full-fledged action hero and adventurer in this one, not just Nate’s sidekick in the games. Wahlberg, who is also practically a jerk in the picture, sought the job of Drake for a reason, and it shows in this film, despite the fact that he moans about his ankle in one moment and punches up one of the tough guys fighting him in another.
Because Wahlberg gets as much screen time as Holland, his role in the story is just as important. Far from being a ‘sidekick’ as in the games, he is a full-fledged protagonist, and it makes enough sense that the cinematic Uncharted is more of a genuine buddy film – a sort of modern Tango and Cash – than a proper adaptation of Nathan Drake’s adventures. Who knows, it might have been better to have forced the two characters into the original roles because they can use their acting repertoire to better advantage.
Those that aren’t so great
So the two major characters are enjoyable, but only with reservations when compared to the original ones, but what about the other characters and the film itself? The film version of Chloe Frazer, who is a seductive ‘dog’ and a full-fledged adventurer and gunfighter, is a pale imitation of the original – in every sense of the word. Sophia Taylor Ali, who plays Chloe Frazer, may be somewhat compatible with the original character in appearance (she’s just too thin), but the film version of Chloe, who is a seductive ‘dog’ and a full-fledged Taylor’s Chloe is similar to Alicia Vikander’s Lara Croft in that she’s not horrible, but there’s room for improvement. It’s true that she has too much “soul” and is less cool than the original character, but it’s also true that she is always deceiving her fellow characters. (Perhaps a little too much for the in-game hero.)
As for the bad men and bad ladies, Antonio Banderas delivers his weary routine as Moncada, which is fairly predictable. Tati Gabrielle is a bit more interesting as Moncada’s right-hand man Braddock, but the writing pigeonholes her as such a wholly terrible character that we are reminded of Nadine Ross, who is based on her.
What is real Uncharted and what isn’t
Even though the twists and turns are fairly predictable, the film’s narrative is rather excellent, despite the poor performances (except for one). The basic theme of the Uncharted games is a treasure hunt, with some logic and action thrown in for good measure. In terms of the latter, there might have been more of it, particularly the firefights, since, despite the fact that they are the focus of the games, Nathan seldom fires. OK, it couldn’t have been done the same way because PG-13 would have made a Desperados-level shooting orgy unthinkable (if the adaptation had been faithful in this regard, Roberto Rodriguez would have been the obvious choice for director), but Nate could have pulled out a little more gun or rifle if that’s the central motif on all the games’ covers.
Nothing less than a decent and fun adventure picture – nothing more.
Uncharted is without a doubt one of the greatest video game adaptations, despite the fact that it has nothing to do with the original material in many areas. Every fan must determine for themselves if Holland and Wahlberg are excellent as Nate and Sully, or how acceptable or frightening it is that they are so unlike. In any case, this cinematic Uncharted is enough exciting, spectacular, exotic, and relaxing for a good two hours – if you’re up for that and aren’t looking for the original franchise everywhere and at all costs, you’ll have a good time; otherwise, skip this adaptation and go back to Nate’s latest remastered adventure instead.
