NVIDIA’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) technology is finally being made available for Linux gamers, thanks to a recent update from AMD and NVIDIA. DLSS helps in reducing the performance hit that comes with rendering at high-resolution by placing less load on your GPU. It also provides higher quality graphics than standard anti-aliasing techniques or post processing methods.
“NVIDIA DLSS Officially Enabled for Linux Gamers Courtesy of Proton 6.3-8 Update” is a headline that many gamers are excited to hear about. NVIDIA has officially enabled their brand new technology called “DLSS”, which stands for Deep Learning Super Sampling, in the latest version of their proprietary graphics driver software on Linux. Proton, Valve’s Wine-based compatibility layer that lets Linux users to play numerous Windows games through Steam Play, has been updated with official support for NVIDIA DLSS. Support for the green team’s deep learning super sampling technique was first included in the previous release (6.3-7), however it is no longer in beta. It should be noted that this does not imply that all Proton games suddenly support NVIDIA DLSS; the performance-enhancing functionality may only be activated in games that have integrated it (e.g., Control, Red Dead Redemption 2).

The Steam Deck, Valve’s planned portable, uses Proton to run Windows games on its Linux-based SteamOS. According to ProtonDB, Proton currently supports over 17,000 games.
